According to the latest projections by research firm Gartner, mobile ads will generate close to $3.3 billion worldwide before the end of 2011. By comparison, the mobile ads industry saw only $1.6 billion in 2010. Gartner also projects that mobile ads will top $20 billion annually by the end of 2015.

Nokia’s newly announced N9 is built with a 1 GHz Texas Instruments OMAP3630, a PowerVR SGX530 GPU and an 8 megapixel camera. In a recent Nokia Conversations blog post, Nokia claims that its new N9 can capture a photo 2.6 seconds after the camera application is launched, compared to 3 seconds for Apple’s iPhone 4, and up to 8.3 seconds for the Windows Phone powered HTC HD7.

According to mobile security company Lookout, there is a new version of Android Trojan - GGTracker, which is automatically downloaded to a user’s phone after visiting a malicious webpage that imitates the Android Market. The Trojan is able to sign-up a victim to a number of premium SMS subscription services without the user’s consent. This can lead to unapproved charges to a victim’s phone bill.

Apple and Samsung legal lawsuits have been ongoing for quite a while and rumor has it that the two giants might settle out of court. Apple sued Samsung in April, claiming Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets infringe several patents and trademarks. Samsung then countersued, asserting its own patents against Apple.

According to the latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report from International Data Corporation (IDC), the global smartphone market is on pace to grow 55% in 2011 (472 million shipments). But over the next four years, IDC says smartphone shipments will reach unprecedented new heights. By 2015, IDC estimates that worldwide smartphone shipments will reach 982 million. By comparison, only 305 million smartphones were shipped in 2010.

Microsoft has recently announced that it is shutting down the number of active services available to Windows Mobile 6.x devices starting next month. The web-based Marketplace will be put out of commission on July 15, leaving only the on-device app store functional.
